How to style a heading with horizontal lines either side using CSS

You’d think it’d be the simplest of things to create a centred heading with horizontal lines either side of it, but as is so often the case in web design, when you throw in lots of different browsers and devices, things aren’t so simple after all.

Customizing the Hootsuite dashboard to create a cleaner, brighter theme

Tired of the dated, fussy design of the Hootsuite dashboard? I was, so I created a new cleaner version, which you can use on your own Hootsuite dashboard (if you use Chrome or Firefox).

Improved Hootsuite theme

Restyling Hootsuite

Here at vclever, we’re big users of Hootsuite, a social media dashboard that makes it easy to manage multiple accounts on Facebook and Twitter, amongst others. But the hideous appearance of the dashboard niggles at me. While others, like Twitter and Google+, have been rolling out beautiful new looks, Hootsuite’s three themes are starting to look a bit tired and dated thanks to thick shadows and strong gradients plastered everywhere, and colour-schemes that are less than tasteful.

Although I had better things to be doing at the time(!!), I decided to dabble with Hootsuite’s CSS using Chrome’s developer tools to make the appearance fresher, easier on the eye, cleaner and brighter. (more…)

Latest creation for architectural consultants Morph

Morph website

We’ve recently finished a web design and development project for Morph Design Creatives, a London-based architectural consultancy.

We always enjoy designing for designers – it’s great to exchange ideas and it gives us a kick when fellow designers appreciate our work!

The brief was to create a site that put their work centre-stage and reflected their own design philosophies. It was also essential that our client was able to manage content themselves.

The result was a strikingly minimalistic site with a heavy focus on imagery. It was very important that the design portfolio was simple to get around and we focused on simplicity, with intuitive navigation that works beautifully on desktops, but also allows easy touch navigation on phones and tablets.

Aspen in the house!

Aspen In-house

How do you show that a recruitment consultancy is open, up-front and friendly?  How can you illustrate that they’re not like everybody else?  And how do you get that message across to a target audience of seasoned recruitment consultants?

These are questions we asked ourselves when fulfilling a brief to create a new brand for a recruitment consultancy that places outstanding  consultants into in-house roles. We were tasked with creating a brand identity that would reflect openness, community, friendliness and being experts at the very specialist thing they do. (more…)

We love Love Swimming

Love Swimming Image

We’re very pleased to announce the launch of Love Swimming’s brand spanking new website.

Rather than bang on about what we’ve done and the features, just go have a look. If you’re looking for swimming lessons (whether fun ones for your kids or top-level coaching for yourself), you can’t do better than these guys.

The company is already a success, but we think they’re on their way to great things. As their digital marketing partners, we’re looking forward to continually working with founders Rui and Bila to really take them places. Expect to see more from Love Swimming!

Robservations is born

Robservations image

We’re proud to announce that Robservations.ca was officially unveiled today.

Robservations is the blog of Robert Booth, a digital media strategist who heads up internet media planning and buying at BOS – an award-winning Canadian ad agency.  Robservations is his new personal platform for asides, irreverent (r)observations and occasional serious views on digital media.  And he can certainly be considered an authority on all things digital, having been a judge at the Canadian Marketing and Digital Marketing Awards, as well as the recipient of numerous innovation awards himself.

We’ve been very willing co-conspirators on robservations, helping to put the concept together and designing the look and workings of the blog – a mix of new media with the more traditional elements of paper, pen and post-its.

WordPress – our content management platform of choice for blogging – is the engine behind the site.  We designed a bespoke template, which  gives this blog a unique look and, just as importantly, makes the site very easy to read and get around.

Check it out at www.robservations.ca and as always, we’d love to know what you think.
