Gmail has come in for some stick from email marketers as a few of its features can make life a little difficult when you’re trying to make sure a beautifully-crafted email looks as it should and actually stands a chance of being read by the recipient. One such feature was the introduction of the tabbed inbox which has the effect of automatically filing away ‘promotional’ emails in their own special place where they can be easily ignored and may never see the light of day. In addition, Gmail also presents a number of barriers to measuring how effective a campaign is (i.e. tracking such things as who opened emails, which device or email client they used, and where they were located). Will it be the next big thing? Who knows! But one thing’s for sure – they know how to build intrigue and create buzz, as people are scrambling to reserve their ‘handles’ despite not having a clue what on earth Kohort is.
So, how have they managed this without even announcing what the product is?

These are questions we asked ourselves when fulfilling a brief to create a new brand for a recruitment consultancy that places outstanding consultants into in-house roles. Rather than bang on about what we’ve done and the features, just go have a look. If you’re looking for swimming lessons (whether fun ones for your kids or top-level coaching for yourself), you can’t do better than these guys.
The company is already a success, but we think they’re on their way to great things. As their digital marketing partners, we’re looking forward to continually working with founders Rui and Bila to really take them places. Expect to see more from Love Swimming!

Robservations is the blog of Robert Booth, a digital media strategist who heads up internet media planning and buying at BOS – an award-winning Canadian ad agency. Robservations is his new personal platform for asides, irreverent (r)observations and occasional serious views on digital media. And he can certainly be considered an authority on all things digital, having been a judge at the Canadian Marketing and Digital Marketing Awards, as well as the recipient of numerous innovation awards himself.
We’ve been very willing co-conspirators on robservations, helping to put the concept together and designing the look and workings of the blog – a mix of new media with the more traditional elements of paper, pen and post-its.
WordPress – our content management platform of choice for blogging – is the engine behind the site. We designed a bespoke template, which gives this blog a unique look and, just as importantly, makes the site very easy to read and get around.
Check it out at www.robservations.ca and as always, we’d love to know what you think.

Southern Rail is a perfect case in point. They’ve clearly blown a fair amount of cash on marketing recently and the website seems to have got the full treatment.
The booking system is slick (especially given the complexity of fares and timetables it has to deal with) and everything is presented pretty cleanly and simply. Read the full article
Well, I’ll be using this blog to show you what we’re currently working on, to update you on any interesting stories and developments here at vclever and within the industry, and to voice my opinion on anything from technology, digital marketing, web and graphic design, and advertising.
If that sounds a bit dull, it really won’t be! As you know, we’ve got a pretty informal style here, so don’t expect me to gibber on about dry marketing or technological theories – I’ll try to stick to interesting things we’re up to, bizarre stories or cutting edge stuff. I love gadgets (and digital gadgets/tools at that) so will mention them whenever I come across cool stuff that I think you should take a look at.
Welcome and hope you enjoy the posts to come…
